Fashion Rules: Fuck Flattering

April 9, 2013

My original intention for this post was to talk about mixing precious metals, namely silver and gold. I decided to do a quick search for fashion faux pas and fashion rules before I got started. I was surprised the top hit was a personal blog from some guy named William M. Briggs entitled "Top 10 Women’s Fashion Rules" from 2010.
Men telling women what to wear.
I hate to give traffic to this blog post, so if you want to read the whole article I can also C/P it in the comments.

Here are some highlights:
Prints. Never—as in never—wear animal prints.
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Jeans. Unless you are between roughly 18 to 24, don’t wear them. And even if you are in this range, if you are too fat or too skinny, do not wear them...There is saying that goes, “There is a pair of jeans that can fit anybody.” This is a myth, with vicious consequences
I can't even.

According to Briggs, the beauty industry is run by women and non-heterosexual men so his advice is actually better and more legitimate because he is a straight male. I can't even begin to tear apart his actual advice because 1) everything is awful or cliche 2) I don't care enough to waste my time on something so stupid. There are probably some women out there who agree with him (iwnbfwtg), but for the most part he sounds oblivious to fashion and leaning on the bigoted side.

And there are thousands of articles just like this. People telling us what we should be wearing and how we should be wearing it. A generous amount of articles like this are written for white women and their bodies in mind. There are very few articles out there where a women of color's body is the "female ideal". Certainly not my body shape. When I write in WC, I want women to feel like they can wear whatever makes them feel comfortable and confident. My personal style is no indication of how I think all overweight women should dress.

This might be indicative of how much I enjoy shopping, but nothing makes me feel like more of a babe then when I have just bought an article of clothing that I think looks amazing. It can be new or used, but if you like it then its right for you.

When I wore this Zara necklace and antique ring my last night in Austin, I felt amazing. I think everyone deserves to feel that way.
